With hilltop fortresses, awe-inspiring temples and romantic gardens
filled with blossoming trees, this 'city of Dreams' is, not surprisingly,
a favourite with travellers, both Indian and foreign. A fantasy island palace

romantic hotels in the world.
Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal is one of the seven wonders of the world and it is visited by many people around the world. It is located in Agra, New Delhi. In 1612, Shah Jehan, who was the fifth mughal emperor, built this tomb for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. This marriage, although the emperor's second, was a real love-match, and Mumtaz was her husband's everlasting companion on all his journeys and military expeditions. She bore him fourteen children, and died in childbed in 1630 (only three years after his accession to the throne) in Burhanpur in the Deccan where she had accompanied him on a military campaign. Overpowered by grief, Shah Jehan was determined to perpetuate her memory for immortality and decided to build his beloved wife the finest sepulchre ever - a monument of eternal love. It was Shah Jehan's everlasting love for Mumtaz that led to the genesis of the Taj Mahal. After twenty-two laborious years, and the combined effort of over twenty thousand workmen and master craftsmen, the complex was finally completed in 1648 on the banks on the river Yamuna in Agra, the capital of mughal monarchs. This monument is visited by many lovers around the world.
Ajanta and Ellora Caves
The Ajanta group of caves were discovered only in the 19th century.
A group of British officers on a tiger hunt, stumbled on these ancient
works of art. The 29 caves were built as secluded retreats of the Buddhist
monks, who taught and performed rituals in the Chaityas and Viharas, the
ancient seats of learning, and nerve - centres of the Buddhist cultural
movement. Using simple tools like hammer and chisel, the monks carved out
the impressive figures adorning the walls of these structures. Many
of the caves house panels depicting stories from the Jatakas, a rich mine
of tales of the several incarnations of the Buddha. Images of nymphs and
princesses amongst others, are also elaborately portrayed. The Ajanta
caves and the treasures they house, are a landmark in the overall development
of Buddhism as such.
The Ellora caves have 34 caves in number. The The 12 caves to the south are Buddhist, the 17 in the centre dedicated to Hinduism, and the 5 caves to the north are Jain. Its two - storied structure sports a colourful pageant of dwarfs, dancing and making music. What is amazing about it is the fact, that unlike other temple structures which are built base onwards, the sculptor or architect involved here, started carving from the very top and the sides. Gigantic, though it is, it remains one of the most delicate and intricate ancient works of art.
These cave shrines are memorable for their invaluable contribution to the enormous wealth of Indian heritage.
